Founded by Jos\u00e9 Carlos Frias, Albano Pimentel, and Jos\u00e9 Garcia, it is currently managed by only one of its founders, Jos\u00e9 Carlos Frias, along with his wife, Maria Helena Frias. The opening date was a symbolic and bold choice: symbolic because it honoured the celebration of World Poetry Day, and bold because it marked a turning point for the concept of \u201cbookstore\u201d in the Azores, creating a consistent plethora of cultural events \u2014 expositions, book launches, debates, get-togethers \u2014, which stimulated the city\u2019s public and intellectual spheres, as it still does nowadays.<\/p>\n

The cultural events hosted in this bookstore \u2014 all of them held with the intention of bringing together regional and national authors \u2014 have had the attendance of notable figures, such as: Ant\u00f3nio Lobo Antunes, Jos\u00e9 Saramago (Nobel Prize in Literature 1998), Jos\u00e9 Cardoso Pires, Mia Couto, Urbano Bettencourt, Emanuel Jorge Botelho, Daniel de S\u00e1, Fernando Aires, Dias de Melo, Vamberto Freitas, \u00c1lamo de Oliveira, On\u00e9simo Teot\u00f3nio de Almeida, Jo\u00e3o de Melo; as well as authors who are building the new generation of literature: Joel Neto, Jo\u00e3o Pedro Porto, Leonardo, Nuno Costa Santos, Maria Brand\u00e3o, Leonor Sampaio, among many other renowned Azorean writers.<\/p>\n

From its inception, Livraria Solmar has been a space of symbiosis between writers and artists, hosting exhibition openings, many of which happened in the 90s.<\/p>\n

In the decade of 2000, Artes e Letras is launched, a publisher that is currently autonomous and managed by Maria Helena Frias, printing tittles of great importance: Raul Brand\u00e3o\u2019s Ilhas Desconhecidas<\/em>, Antero de Quental\u2019s Sonetos Completos<\/em>, Maria das Merc\u00eas Pacheco\u2019s Viajantes nos A\u00e7ores<\/em>, and others.<\/p>\n
